About Editor and open source

The project’s license, origins, release model, and ways to contribute.

A desktop tool you can inspect#

Editor builds on OpenCut and is distributed under the MIT license. Version 0.2.0 adds dedicated creative workspaces, dockable editing panels, expanded text and caption tools, effects, transitions, and application handoffs.

What the license allows#

You can use, copy, modify, distribute, sublicense, and sell the software under the license's conditions, including retaining the required notices. The software is provided without warranty to the extent permitted by law. Read the complete license on this site.

Your footage and output remain subject to the rights in the material you use. The software license does not grant ownership of third-party media, music, fonts, plug-ins, or trademarks.

Learn and contribute#

The project is in active development. Helpful contributions include clear reproduction steps, testing platform-specific behavior, improving documentation, accessibility review, and code changes. Keep private media out of public reports and use a minimal sample you have permission to share.

Source code is available as a direct ZIP download. This is developer source, not an installer. Most visitors should use the desktop downloads.

Release expectations#

Early releases can have platform-specific limitations. Review the release notes, keep important source footage backed up, and verify exported files before relying on a delivery. There is no promise of a particular release schedule or compatibility with every third-party application.
